Containment: The Key to Oil and Chemical Spills

Oil Spill CleanupMany companies try to prevent chemical spills and oil leaks; they plan the correct methods to minimise the damage that oil could cause. Prevention is always the best answer to limit the damage that oil spills could do. All workers need to be well-trained on how to store, handle, use and transport oil. However, if a spill occurs, you need to prepare to handle such situations.

Protect your property

Oil spills that happen on both land and water can affect animals and other living things. Oil and chemical leaks could affect food resources that are essential to animal life. If the oil spills on the ground you need to take action and prevent it from soaking even further and reaching underground water supplies or building foundations.

A leaking tank

If you find that your oil tank is leaking, make sure to empty the tank first. To seal the crack you can use leak sealing putty found in oil spill kits. When sealing a leaky tank, make sure you use vinyl or rubber gloves and that you place a drop cloth in the repair area. If you are dealing with plastic tanks, you can use a batch of epoxy resin and its catalyst to cover the leak.

Clean up the spill

Use spill mats and pads to clean up any oil spill and prevent its damage. Ensure you collect the contaminated materials and dispose of them correctly. Use plastic pails and drums that would suit the extent of the damage.

For many companies, prevention is key when it comes to oil or chemical spills. Have a plan in place that will protect not only your facilities and workers but also the planet and all the animals that share this world with you.
